The UK is committed to delivering its share of the EU target of 20% of energy from sources by 2020. Currently only 2% of UK energy (and under 5% of UK electricity) comes from renewable sources.
The Government must deliver a huge increase in UK renewable energy if it is to meet its share of the target of 20% of EU energy to come from renewable sources by 2020 (energy includes electricity, transport fuels and heat). The 15% target which the EU has allocated to the UK would, if adopted, require the UK to generate about 40% of its electricity from renewable sources – an eight fold increase from current levels
On 1st April 2010 the Government introduced the Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) to encourage new investment in low carbon green technologies.
Under the FITs, anyone who installs an eligible Solar PV system from Derby Solar will receive a guaranteed fixed payment for all the electricity you generate, including what you use, guaranteed and tax free for a period of 25 years. You will also receive an additional payment for any electricity not used that you export back into the National Grid. As an added bonus, by installing a system you will also benefit from reduced electricity bills as they’ll effectively become their own power stations and so won’t need to use as much from electricity suppliers and the grid.
This means that there has never been a better time for you to install a Solar PV system. Not only will you be significantly reducing your carbon footprint, you’ll also be reducing your energy bills and getting paid to do it!
How are Feed In Tariffs paid?
Feed-in Tariffs are paid by electricity suppliers in one of two ways; either as a direct payment into your bank account or as a credit line to your energy bills. The latter may mean that if you generate more electricity than use you could stop paying energy bills altogether.
How much will I be paid and what will I save?
The amount you are paid will depend on the size and type of system that you install as different technologies receive different amounts for different lengths of time. These payments are intended to give a certain percent return each year based on the initial cost of a system.
Solar PV has been given the highest rate of payment and so for the majority of people it is the best option. The exact amounts available for the different sizes of PV systems are detailed below:
Size of PV System Feed in Tariff (p/kWh)
<4kW (new build) 37.8
<4kW (retrofit) 43.3
4 – 10kW 37.8
These feed-in tariff rates are paid for each unit of electricity generated, even if you use it in your own house/building. In addition to this if you have any excess electricity it can be exported back to the grid and you will get an extra 3p/kWh. This export can be measured by having an export meter installed by your electricity supplier, but in most cases this will not be financially worthwhile and so a deemed export amount of 50% will be used.
BE AWARE - Check out your installers credentials. If they are not MCS accredited insallers - You will not be able to access the feed-in tariff scheme
BE AWARE - Some companies are offering to install PV to your home for very little financial outlay. In return THEY are taking all the benefits of the feed-in tariff
Derby Solar Ltd only use approved MCS products.
After you have made your decision to have a Pv system, its then time to install it. To qualify for Feed-In Tariffs the technology must be installed by Microgeneration Cerification Scheme certified products and installers.
After the solar panel technology is installed the energy supplier must be notified, and the Feed-In Tariff certificate from the installer must be accepted. You will be able to check your meter readings and the amount of energy produced by your generation meter.
After this you are ready to begin receiving the financial benefits and fuel bill savings from the Feed-In Tariff scheme! This will not only help your pocket, but also significantly help reduce harmful effects to the environment.
